Trust in the Midst of Uncertainty

Uncertainty is a reality that we all face. Whether it’s the pain of losing a job or the unsettling feeling of not knowing what the future holds, life often takes unexpected turns that remind us we are not in control. But for those of us who belong to God, uncertainty is not a reason to despair—it is a divine invitation to trust more deeply in the One who sovereignly holds all things together.

I worked at the same workplace for six years. Everyday I worked hard and I earned promotions. Then one day we received new management. I was faced with the unknown, the uncertainty of how the new management would want to operate. I decided that in the uncertainty, I would keep doing what I always did and prove myself to the new management. But I quickly realized that there were some things in motion that were out of my control, and despite giving it my all, the new management decided to terminate my employment. I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. I lost my income, my routine was shattered, and fear quickly set in. I had to be reminded that I wasn’t the one controlling my life.

Uncertainty also crept in during my time of unemployment when I realized that I lacked a long-term vision for my life. There is pressure from society to have a “life plan,” and it can be difficult to deal with, especially when everyone else seems to have it all figured out. But Scripture reminds us that our lives are not our own. James 4:13–15 confronts the illusion of control: “You do not even know what will happen tomorrow… Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’” God is sovereign. He is not only aware of our tomorrow—He ordains it. When we surrender our future to His will, we begin to live not by anxiety, but by trust.

Scripture also reminds us that God is not absent in these moments—He is our refuge. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea” (Psalm 46:1–3). Even when life feels like it’s falling apart, God remains steadfast. He is not surprised by our losses. He is present, strong, and able to provide—not just materially, but spiritually, emotionally, and eternally.

God never promised that life would be easy or predictable, but He did promise to be with us. In Philippians 4:6–7, Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” We are not told to suppress our worries, but to bring them before the throne of a loving Father who listens. And as we do, God gives us something the world cannot offer: His peace—deep, unshakable peace that does not depend on our circumstances.

God uses seasons of uncertainty to draw us closer to Himself. These moments reveal where we’ve decided to place our trust. Whether it is in our careers, plans, or even ourselves, we need to realign our hope with the only One who never changes. The goal is not to regain control but to rest and be satisfied in God’s control.

In the face of the unknown, we are not left to wander aimlessly. We are led by a Good Shepherd who knows every step of the path, even when we cannot see it. Our job is not to have all the answers, but to cling to the One who does. And in Him, we find peace, purpose, and the confidence to walk forward—even when the future is unclear.
