Part 1 – Cause of Conflict – July 3

Discussion Questions:
Worship by renewing our minds in God’s Word:
- What passage of scripture did Dr. Aucoin focus on?
- What did you find helpful?
- Read Matthew 15:10-20—Where does Jesus say our behaviour comes from?
- According to Hebrews 4:12, what is the only tool that is able to deal with the desires of the heart?
Grow by engaging our hearts with God’s Word in community:
- Why do we do the things that we do? In other words, what is the source of the behaviour that produces fights and quarrels?
- What are some examples of the desires of the heart?
- Is it wrong to have strong desires? (v.2)
- What are the two ways to know if a godly desire has become a sinful desire?
Serve a hurting world by enlisting our bodies:
- What does the world say about why we do what we do?
- How do the desires of your heart affect your state of being?
- Where does murder start? Name one situation in which you were willing to sin to get what you wanted.
- What does being envious do? Name one situation in which have you sinned because you didn’t get what you wanted.
- God promises a different response when our desires are humbled under His desires. What are two ways you can submit your desires to God’s desires this week?

- Read Ephesians 4:22—What are deceitful desires?
- Read Jeremiah 2:11-13—What two sins did God’s people commit? How does this apply to what we are talking about?
Grow by engaging our hearts with God’s Word in community:
- What is physical adultery? What is adultery to us as believers?
- What are some examples of idols we have made in our lives?
- What is friendship with the world and what does it do to our relationship with God?
- In light of when the Bible was written, are we any different than when the Israelites bowed down and worshiped statues?
- How did God make each of us? What are the two choices we have?
Serve a hurting world by enlisting our bodies:
- How does all of this change the way we view our circumstances and other people?
- When our hearts are prideful, what does God say he will do?
- What are some examples of humiliation? When have you experienced this in your life?
- Explain the top portion of the diagram and give a real-life example of a proud heart that God humbled.

- What is Jesus telling his disciples in Matthew 19:27-30?
- What will happen to us when our desires are focused on God? (Psalm 37:1-6)
- How is Psalm 73 an example of listening? What rescued the psalmist?
Grow by engaging our hearts with God’s Word in community:
- What does it mean to humble yourself? How do we submit to God? Draw near to God? Resist the Devil?
- What were the 8 example questions Dr. Aucoin gave to help evaluate our issues of the heart?
- How long will the praise of man last? What is the result when we try to exalt ourselves?
- How should we respond when we notice the wickedness of our hearts?
- What does it mean to be a conscious Christian?
Serve a hurting world by enlisting our bodies:
- What are at least 2 examples of how the 8 questions mentioned above helped you evaluate your heart this week?
- What are some questions we can ask when drawing near to the Word of God?
- Explain the bottom portion of the diagram and give a real-life example of a humble heart that God exalted.
- What should we taste and see after going through this process? How might that change our future responses to different states of being in our lives?
